Why do we feel so confident that leaders are required throughout an organisation? Most leadership experts agree that leadership is all about influence: the ability to influence the thoughts, feelings and behaviours of others. Thus, leadership works through people and culture, not hierarchy and systems, and leadership must be embedded in the business at all levels. If you are a leader, each new leader that you help to create allows your influence to be extended through that person to everybody that they touch. They also deliver innovation and creativity to the parts of the business that only they can reach!

The good news is that every leadership competence can be learned - most people who have become exceptional leaders were not born that way. However, outstanding leadership of others always has its foundation in exceptional self-awareness and self-leadership, and considerable personal development may be necessary. Great leadership is a process that starts with one's self and works from the inside out.
